Obama Kills Keystone While Defending Energy Record

Obama's energy policy is simple: If a fossil fuel is available in North America, regulate it out of existence.

Within 24 hours of rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline project—angering unions, industry, and Republicans, President Obama released his first campaign ad touting his record on energy. The ad cites a study from the Brookings Institute and implies that President Obama has created 2.7 million jobs in green energy, a number that is “expanding rapidly.” Next the ad brags about the fact that for the first time in 13 years, America is now less than 50% dependent on foreign oil. Both numbers have some truth—but both have little to do with the President’s efforts.

First, the jobs number. 2.7 million green jobs is the total number of green jobs in the economy—many of which existed long before President Obama took office. Additionally, according to a Reason fact check, while the 2.7 million number may be “clean” jobs, only a small fraction of that number are actually in the “green energy” industry: 140,000 according to Brookings—and this was before thousands of jobs were lost at Solyndra, Stirling Energy, Range Fuels, or other green energy companies that have gone under in the past few months.

Next, the claim that America is now less dependent on foreign oil. This is true, but deceptive. Our lowered dependence is not because the President has done anything good, it is in part because of the bad economy. People are using less oil, therefore we need less from foreign sources. Additionally, we are producing more oil domestically. North Dakota’s Bakken Field has doubled its production in the past two years—from 246,000 barrels a day to 509,754 in November 2011. Just this domestic production is enough to completely displace oil imported from Iraq. President Obama cannot take any credit for the Bakken windfall. In fact, his administration is threatening a moratorium on fracking, which would send the oil patch in to a free fall—thousands of workers would be unemployed overnight and the US dependence on foreign oil would shoot up past 50%.

Obama’s EPA doesn’t like states having their own regulations; preferring, instead, that everything be done on the federal level where they are more insulated from local input. When states can make their own decisions, the dramatic impact of regulation becomes obvious. Pennsylvania allows horizontal hydraulic fracturing (HHF); New York does not. The contrast is stark. In Upstate New York, property taxes have been raised due to the known oil assets, but a HHF moratorium prevents people from cashing in on their bounty. In many cases landowners’ annual tax bill is more than their mortgage. Local governments are facing eminent bankruptcy. Farmers have had to shut down their farms and find work in the oil industry across the state line in Pennsylvania. What they see in Pennsylvania is a vibrant economy. Families are moving in. New homes are being built. Farms are buzzing with activity and new equipment. Help wanted signs are everywhere. In the past few years, unemployment has dropped from 10% to 5%.

The EPA has been piling regulations on the energy creators that will raise costs of electricity—hurting consumers and businesses. New rules such as the Cross State Air Pollution Rule, the Utility MACT Rule, and Coal Ash Regulation, will force coal-fueled power plants to shut down and kill thousands of jobs. Last week, the state vs. federal regulation issue cropped up when environmental groups announced they would sue the EPA to accelerate the agency’s regulation of coal ash—causing coal ash to be regulated on a federal level by the EPA as hazardous waste, adding costs of up to $110 billion over twenty years and killing an estimated 316,000 jobs. Currently, states make their own individual decisions that fit their unique circumstances about treatment and disposal of coal ash.

It is not just the EPA. Under the Obama administration, proposed listings of endangered species have gone up, rushed through with spurious science. Oddly—or perhaps not so oddly, the habitat of the proposed species is often an area with known natural resources—such as the oil-rich Permian Basin of West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico. For the past year, locals have been fighting the proposed listing of the sand dune lizard, knowing that the ESA listing could decimate the region—much like the spotted owl listing did to the logging communities of the Pacific Northwest.

On Wednesday, January 18, The New Mexico Association of Counties unanimously approved a resolution in opposition to the listing of the sand dune lizard as an endangered species. Listing proponents claim the industry is using scare tactics to stir up local opposition to the listing. However, even though the lizard is currently in a “proposed” status—and is not officially listed, there is already an economic impact to the region. For example, a local mining company has a 4-mile water pipeline that needs to be repaired. The BLM will not allow them access to the line because it is in the lizard’s habitat. Instead, they’ve been told that they must build a new pipeline that will go around the proposed habitat. The new pipeline will be twenty miles long and cost estimates are at $30 million or more—which will likely require extensive environmental impact studies before the work can commence. And, this is before the lizard is actually listed. Imagine all the obstacles and increased costs industry will have if the lizard is listed.

America’s lowered dependence on foreign oil is not because of President Obama, it is in spite of the efforts of his administration. It is not due to government encouragement, but rather due to industry innovation and American grit and determination.

The proposed moratorium on fracking in the Bakken Field would kill jobs, coal ash regulation could be the most detrimental of all of the new regulations, and the proposed listing of the Sand Dune Lizard could turn a booming regional economy into a series of ghost towns.

There is plenty of talk about the proposed jobs killed by the President’s decision to deny the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline, but jobs have already been lost. For example, Welspun Tublar Company in Little Rock Arkansas makes steel pipe for the oil industry. They have 500 miles of pipe that was expected to ship out for the Keystone XL pipeline. After President Obama announced he would delay his decision until after the November 2012 election (for which he has now officially denied the permit), Welspun had to lay off 60 employees. The mother-in-law of one of the workers to lose his job says, “Obama is killing jobs on purpose. The more people he can get on the dole, the more control he has over them.”

In his frequent promises to focus on jobs, we just didn’t understand that he meant focusing on killing jobs in the oil, gas, and coal industries.

Despite the Obama campaign ad’s claims, President Obama is not creating jobs in the energy sector, and he is not responsible for the reduction in foreign oil imports. His administration’s agenda-driven actions are, perhaps, more about bolstering the Democratic Party than boosting the American economy. If the administration can ban the use of fracking for oil and gas extraction, they will deal a near fatal blow to the domestic energy boom—which is a result of industry’s technological advances in hydraulic fracturing—and turn off the flow of new wealth into states formerly hit by hard times. A government-dependent public tends to vote Democrat to insure the entitlements continue. The higher-paying jobs in the energy sector, the ability of landowners to prosper, and revitalized communities eliminate the need for federal handouts. Natural gas’ abundance has dropped prices to new lows, threatening the viability of highly-favored, taxpayer-subsidized wind, solar, and ethanol.

It is in the Democrats’ self-interest to brag about their energy record, while subtly using regulation to virtually end domestic energy development.

Obama Speech Brags About 3 Million New Jobs (Fails To Mention 3 Million New Foreign Work Permits)
By Roy Beck, Tuesday, January 24, 2012, 11:50 PM EST

Compared to the heavy-metal terror I used to feel listening to Pres. Bush's State of the Union immigratiion appeals, Pres. Obama's obligatory immigration section tonight was easy-listening music. The verses and chorus pushing for amnesties for illegal aliens were nearly identical to last year's speech and just didn't sound like he had a thought in the world that any of it could happen.

What really galled me, though, was Pres. Obama bragging about more than 3 million U.S. jobs created during the last 22 months.

That could have been good news for unemployed Americans. But during that same period, the Obama Administration issued more than 3 million work visas to new immigrants and other foreign workers (more than half of them permanent).

What is the point of all that talk in the speech about creating jobs when the federal government is importing so many new workers? Although the number of work permits issued is primarily controlled by Congress, Pres. Obama could be asking for reductions to give relief to all those Americans who have been unemployed for such long periods. He said nothing. And he gave no sign tonight of having the slightest interest in how immigration affects the labor market. In fact, he called again for "comprehensive immigration reform." All bills with that name have included big increases over the already-bloated immigration numbers.

But on our TV screens tonight, the Culprit in Chief in giving away the jobs to foreign workers was not the Commander in Chief giving the speech. Rather, it was the Speaker of the House sitting behind him.

The U.S. House of Representatives could easily pass several great bills that would immediately cut the foreign work permits to far below the job creation numbers. But Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) refuses to bring a single one to the floor for a vote.

Yes, Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-Nev.) and Pres. Obama would push back, but the Republican-majority House could put this issue of giving away most new jobs to immigrants into the national spotlight and force a showdown. Nearly every Republican sitting in that Chamber tonight has been part of a conspiracy of silence with Speaker Boehner to make sure that unemployed Americans don't get priority for new U.S. jobs.

  6. I wonder how many of those who voted for BHO drive around in green cars……..hardly any I suggest. I was also talking with a restaurant server yesterday……he is black, and was very professional, very attentive and obviously understood the importance of his job….I left hi a large tip for his excelent service……..he thanked me for this and prompted him to say that "BHO policies have cut his take home income in half because of the drop in business. "I was conned" he said, "as have all minorities"…"we want wealthy people to spend money with us, tips are important to us.Even those who do come in are paying lower tips." Interesting enough he also said "I want to become rich and said I know I have the work ethic to accomplish this." He has been a typical minority democrat all his life…."but this year" he said "I will vote republican!"

  7. to hell with the EPA bunch of communists have this Country paralyzed. aka obama is an illegal POTUS. NULL and VOID. There is a hearing in the great State of Georgia Jan.26. They are challenging obama on the Georgia ballot,he has been ordered to be there by the Judge. Find this at obamaballotchallenge.com. As the illegal alien muslim/communist treasonous fraud has never—been vetted.—–also,I see the ties and favors to Warren Buffet were not mentioned here, regarding the Keystone pipeline.

    • Ties to Warren Buffet refer to Buffets ownership of BN RR and of course any pipeline running north to south in the US would have to obtain an easement to cross the railroad ROW. The RRs can stop it by not granting easements to cross their ROW. BN & UP would have to be crossed in NE alone. How much did they contribute to the environmental whackos in their campaign against the pipeline.

There was a plan to construct a pipeline from the Powder River Basin coal fields in WY back in the 70s. Coal was to be pulverized and slurried and sent down the pipeline to power plants in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. RRs wanted that business for themselves which is why one sees so many unit trains hauling coal. The one thing that isn't brought up is the number of rail cars that derail each year. Coal is easier to clean up than several thousand bbls of crude oil when a tank care leaves the track. Has Warren calculated the lost cars and cargo into his bottom line?

  9. Just got done listening to obama's state of the union address and can honestly say: it was filled with double-talk useless expressions that were put in to give the American people what they wanted to hear. Gross bla blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. I agree with all those that want obama gone from the White House.

  10. As of now Burlington Northern and Southern Pacific railroad transports all the Bakken oil fields via rail road from north to south at high cost.
    Who owns the rail roads?
    Answer: Warren Buffett
Obama and Buffett are partners, they scratch each others crotch monetarily speaking.
An oil pipe line would shut out Buffett's big profits and monopolizes by cutting out the free enterprise of the pipeline system keeping fuel prices high for big business profits, to hell with the health of the nation for lower fuel prices via high foreign oil.

Get the picture……………….It's all about the elitist greed for money and power from the president to all special interest big business.

  11. Because the words are spoken, it must be true. Hmmm…

  12. James Fontana says:

This lying sack of excerment has not created job one. He is so full of himself. Any one who will take the side of the enviromental wing nuts over the working (unemployerd) man is a moron and that is what this so called president is. He is not a true American, he and hose bag hate this country and want to destroy it. After he's done they will run off to some place else to gloat over their destruction of the best country on earth

  13. obama repeated the same old ,same old lines from his 3 previous SOTU speeches. I was actually amused by his lying and how he throws numbers around. For a supposed smart man he can not see that most of the people are on to his lying game. They are also smirking at him because his speeches no longer have any sway. to be blunt the csound of them are BORING!.

  16. Obummer gave George Soros $2billion dollars to drill oil in Brazil that will be where our will come from Brazil or Africa and through a Gerge Soros co. THINK!!!!! Jobs are going away again

    • @Bob (4 hrs ago),
Bob may not read this but to others who do; the first part is correct. Brazil was promised 2 Billion $$s to drill much deeper than the Deepwater Horizon. Soros has a huge investment in Petrobras (state-owned oil company). Though O said to Brazil " we will be your best customer", the oil will actually be gobbled up by China. So, what did the American taxpayers get for 2 Bil? Shafted. Or did we borrow the 2 Bil from China, so they get first dibs? Something smells very rotten either way.
Obama's energy policy has been and will be disastrous. He must really think that we, the American people, are dumb.

  17. To believe that Obummer has created or even saved as many jobs as he says is totally a figment of HIS imagination! He is worse than Carter could ever imagine. I can't wait to see when the Unions will retreat from him as they should. He is the King of destroying jobs! Anyone, and I mean anyone would be better then him! As for KHM's last line, he does think and in his mind does think we the people are dumb!!!
